PARISH OF MEDAWACHCHIYA

MEDAWACHCHIYA

The presence of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Medawachchiya is a testament to the enduring missionary spirit that began in the mid-20th century. What started as a mission covered by neighboring parishes has blossomed into a vibrant, self-sustaining spiritual community.

Historical Foundations

The history of the parish dates back to October 1, 1951, when the pioneering missionary Fr. Reginald de Silva, OMI, then Parish Priest of Kekirawa, began providing pastoral care to the Catholics of Medawachchiya. As the community grew, the mission was supported by the priests of Anuradhapura under the leadership of Fr. Michael Croos, OMI, in 1964.

Recognizing the need for a permanent presence, Fr. Michael Croos built the first small mission house in Medawachchiya. This paved the way for the official establishment of the Parish of Medawachchiya in 1969, which initially unified the Catholic communities of Padaviya, Medawachchiya, and Rambewa under the care of Fr. Gilbert Perera, OMI.

Development and Consecrated Life

During his tenure from 1969 to 1978, Fr. Gilbert Perera significantly expanded the parish infrastructure by constructing a new Mission House and converting the original structure into a convent. This expansion invited a rich tradition of collaboration with religious congregations:

  • The Good Shepherd Sisters: Arrived on January 24, 1974, beginning a long legacy of compassionate service to the local community.

  • The Rosarian Sisters: Established their community life in Walpola on December 20, 2000.

  • The Franciscan Minim Sisters of the Sacred Heart: Currently contribute to the spiritual fabric of the parish.

A Legacy of Pastoral Zeal

The parish has been served by several dedicated Oblates who have fostered the growth of the local faithful. Notable among them was Fr. Sarath Perera, OMI, who served zealously from 2005 to 2012.

The Parish Today

Today, a significant attention is given to to building a "living parish community" and animating the parishioners through the Word of God. Through regular meetings and spiritual formation, the parish continues to grow in its awareness of its shared responsibilities and mission within the Church.
