THE MISSIONARY OBLATE JOURNAL

A BIANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE OBLATES OF COLOMBO PROVINCE, SRI LANKA

A Biannual Publication of the Oblates of Colombo Province, Sri Lanka

The Missionary Oblate Journal is a premier publication dedicated to mission animation, theological reflection, and the ongoing formation of the clergy and laity. It serves as an intellectual and spiritual bridge, connecting the charism of St. Eugene de Mazenod with the contemporary challenges of the Church.

Historical Evolution

The journal traces its origins to the Oblate Study Club (OSC), founded between 1955 and 1959 by the late Fr. Fredrick Sackett, OMI, the first Rector of the National Seminary in Kandy. During the transition to the new Oblate Scholasticate in Ampitiya, the publication began as a humble, four-page cyclostyled newsletter intended for the student notice board.

Its significance grew when the late Fr. James Cooke, OMI, then Provincial Superior, adopted the magazine as the official Provincial Newsletter. Over the following decades, the journal transitioned into a formal academic and pastoral resource under the guidance of several distinguished editors, including Fr. Leopold Ratnasekara, OMI, and Fr. Claude Perera, OMI. Since 1987, the responsibility for its editorial direction has been spearheaded by Fr. Emmanuel Fernando, OMI.

Scope and Content

As a journal of mission animation, The Missionary Oblate publishes insightful research and reflections on a wide array of ecclesiastical and social themes, including:

  • Theology & Spirituality: Biblical spirituality, pastoral theology, and deep dives into Papal teachings.

  • Social & Ecological Justice: Analysis of contemporary issues through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching and the "Synodal Path."

  • Formation: Perspectives on religious and presbyteral (priestly) formation in the modern world.

A Collaborative Intellectual Mission

The journal is proud to feature contributions from a diverse range of competent Sri Lankan and international writers. This collaborative effort includes voices from the Oblates, Jesuits, Redemptorists, Claretians, and diocesan clergy, as well as significant contributions from the lay faithful. This diversity ensures a holistic and rich perspective on the mission of the Church today.
