Empowering the Most Vulnerable through University Students’ Social Charity Engagement

October 16, 2026

A peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka, where all citizens enjoy a higher standard of living and a better quality of life, can be built through sharing our resources, extending a helping hand to those in need, and uplifting the most vulnerable members of society.

With this vision, volunteer students from the state universities of Colombo, Kelaniya, and Ruhuna came together to conduct a social charity project for the 28 residents of Joy Children’s Home in Mabole, managed by the Salvatorian Sisters.

As part of the programme, nursing students conducted an educational session on basic personal hygiene for the girls, followed by an interactive session that encouraged meaningful engagement and the sharing of experiences.

Dry rations, collected and purchased through the generous contributions of benefactors with the support of the National University Chaplain and the students, were donated to the home. This gesture reflected the students’ commitment to social responsibility, compassion, and solidarity with those who are often overlooked by society.

The programme also created a joyful and welcoming atmosphere, providing opportunities for the girls to enjoy fellowship, friendship, and moments of happiness. The National University Chaplain celebrated Holy Mass for the university students, enabling them to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and renew their spiritual commitment to serving others. The day concluded with informal conversations and fellowship among the students, strengthening their bonds of unity and agape—selfless Christian love.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Rev. Sr. Thushari Fernando and the other Rev. Sisters of the Salvatorian Congregation, as well as the student leaders, volunteers, and generous benefactors who contributed to the success of this meaningful social welfare initiative. Their dedication and commitment bear witness to the Christian call to serve with love, uphold human dignity, and bring hope to the marginalised.

May the Lord bless all those involved in this mission of compassion and inspire more university students to become agents of hope, solidarity, and positive change in society.
