MINISTRY OF FORMATION

The Ministry of Vocations and Formation in the OMI Colombo Province is dedicated to guiding young men through a profound journey of discernment, education, and spiritual transformation. The Oblate formation process is carefully structured to nurture mature, compassionate, and service-oriented individuals who are fully prepared to live out Christian discipleship as Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

This holistic journey is realized through three distinct, progressive stages of formation:

  • The Juniorate (St. Joseph’s, Kohuwala): Serving as the foundational stepping stone, the Juniorate focuses on the holistic human and academic development of young candidates. Through rigorous educational support, physical activities, and initial pastoral exposure, candidates build the psychological and spiritual maturity required to further discern their calling.

  • The Novitiate ("Sidupiyanila", Bandarawela): The spiritual heart of the formation journey. Set in a serene, contemplative environment, this intensive year is dedicated to deep prayer, studying the evangelical counsels (vows), and immersing the novices in the unique charism and history of the Oblate founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod.

  • The Scholasticate (Ampitiya, Kandy): The final, advanced stage of clergy formation. Situated near the National Seminary, the Scholasticate prepares young men for the priesthood and lifelong religious commitment. It combines rigorous theological and philosophical studies with rich community living and active pastoral orientations.

Together, these institutions ensure that every candidate is thoroughly supported—humanly, spiritually, and intellectually—as they prepare to serve the Church and the most abandoned.
