THE MINISTRY OF CARING AND HEALING

The Ministry of Caring and Healing of the OMI Colombo Province is a profound continuation of Jesus Christ’s compassionate mission on earth. Dedicated to restoring the dignity, health, and spirit of the most vulnerable, this ministry provides holistic support—spanning spiritual, physical, psychological, and social care—to those in need across all stages of life.
Operating through a network of specialized institutions and dedicated services, the ministry addresses the diverse realities of human suffering:
-
Pastoral Comfort for the Sick: Through the Hospital Chaplaincy, a dedicated team of Oblate priests offers a steadfast "ministry of presence" in government hospitals, administering the sacraments and providing empathetic, non-judgmental listening to patients in their most vulnerable moments.
-
Psychological and Emotional Restoration: Recognizing the deep need for mental health support, the ministry operates sanctuaries of peace such as Sahana Medura (The Garden of Tranquility) and the Tissa Balasuriya Daham Ketha (TBDK). Through residential care, counseling, and specialized approaches like Narrative Therapy, these centers empower individuals suffering from trauma, depression, and addiction to reclaim their self-worth and inner peace.
-
Uplifting the Marginalized: Serving the deeply challenged inner-city slum communities, Samata Sarana acts as a lifeline for the impoverished. It breaks the cycle of deprivation through comprehensive early childhood education, youth vocational training, elderly feeding programs, and free healthcare clinics.
-
Dignified Elder Care: The ministry is deeply committed to ensuring that senior citizens experience their sunset years with joy, security, and faith. St. Vincent’s Elders' Home in Maggona provides compassionate, free shelter and community for destitute seniors. Additionally, St. Vincent’s Residencies offers a supportive retirement environment that uniquely accommodates elderly married couples and private caregivers, complete with dedicated nursing support.
-
A Haven for Retiring Servants: Honoring a lifetime of spiritual stewardship, Marian Grove serves as a restful sanctuary and vibrant spiritual home for retiring and ailing Oblate priests, fostering beautiful intergenerational connections with younger Oblate students.
Ultimately, the Ministry of Caring and Healing stands as a testament to authentic Christian charity, actively working to heal wounds, alleviate poverty, and bring the light of Christ to the forgotten and the suffering.
