Mazenod College, Anuradhapura, represents a modern continuation of the rich Oblate legacy of education in Sri Lanka. Named after our Founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod, the college was established to provide high-quality, holistic English-medium education to the children of the North Central Province, with a special focus on serving the disadvantaged and fostering inter-religious harmony.

A Legacy Renewed

The Oblate Priests and Brothers have been pioneers of education in Sri Lanka since 1847, guiding some of the most prestigious institutions across the island. The Oblates are no strangers to Anuradhapura; in 1874, Oblate Bishop Christopher Bonjean initiated a local language school that later became St. Joseph's College in 1898. Mazenod College proudly revives this historical commitment to the youth of the region.

Foundation and Vision

The vision to create a new college for the poor—and to foster a "dialogue of life" within a predominantly Buddhist environment—was realized through the leadership of the Provincial Leader, Very Rev. Fr. Irwin Morais, OMI, and the Bishop of Anuradhapura, Rt. Rev. Dr. Norbert Andradi, OMI.

Under the guidance of its first Principal, Fr. Dileepa Jayamaha, OMI, the college began classes on January 3, 2019, at the Rajabima Oblate Centre. The official inauguration on January 7, 2019, beautifully reflected the school's inclusive mission. It was attended not only by Catholic leadership but also by Venerable Nugethane Pagnananda Thero and Hindu Kurukkal Sivashri Balachandran, symbolizing the college's dedication to serving students of all major faiths.

Holistic Formation and Community

Starting with an inaugural class of 30 Grade 1 students, Mazenod College has quickly grown into a beacon of hope. The Oblate educators here believe that service is the inseparable twin of love.

Education at Mazenod goes beyond the intellect; it is a holistic journey that actively involves the wider community. The college places a strong emphasis on family integration, dedicating the last Saturday of every month to parent-teacher formation meetings. By intertwining faith, knowledge, and service, Mazenod College inspires future generations to build a shared legacy of compassion, innovation, and equality.
