SUBA SETH GEDARA

Suba Seth Gedara (The House of Good Wishes) was founded by the late Rev. Fr. Michael Rodrigo, OMI, as a pioneering center for Buddhist-Christian dialogue, mutual understanding, and the integral human development of the rural poor. In this profound mission, he was closely assisted by Sr. Milburga Fernando and Sr. Benedicta Fernandopulle of the Salvatorian Congregation.

The Legacy of Fr. Michael Rodrigo, OMI
Fr. Michael Rodrigo was a brilliant scholar, holding doctorates in Philosophy from the Gregorian University in Rome and in Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris. After his ordination, he began teaching at the National Seminary in Ampitiya. However, driven by a deep desire for contextual formation and service, he left the comforts of academia to assist the late Bishop Leo Nanayakkara, OSB, at a newly founded seminary in Bandarawela.
Eventually, with the Bishop's blessing, Fr. Michael ventured deeper into the peripheries to live among and serve the suffering, marginalized farming communities of Lower Uva in Buttala. While living alongside the poor and advocating for their rights, he faced severe threats. Tragically, on November 10, 1987, while celebrating the Eucharist in his small house, he was martyred by an assassin's bullet.

A Continuing Ministry of Presence
Today, the subsequent Oblate communities at Buttala remain steadfast in continuing Fr. Michael's prophetic vision. They maintain a vital "ministry of presence" among the Buddhist majority, exploring every possibility for inter-religious dialogue while fiercely championing the human development of the local masses.
The Oblates at the center are determined to raise awareness and empower the people to be a non-violent force for justice and peace. Sensitive to the emerging needs and daily struggles of the community, they keep the foundational inspiration of Fr. Michael alive by focusing on three main pillars: Inter-religious Dialogue, Education, and Skills Training.
